New Orleans

We took Chris and Larry to New Orleans this past weekend, we got to experience many things and see a lot of the city.  We went to Marti Gras World and learned all about the 54 parades they have over 10 days of parting.  I never knew anything about it, other than it's a big party.  It's actually pretty organized and a part of their history.  News isn't allowed to cover it so we don't see much about it.
There are society's that put on each parade, they have signature floats each year and usually have a different theme each year.  They pay Marti Gras World staff and artists to make their designs come to life.  They are working on them a full year before the parade.  The props are stored in "dens" throughout the city during the year and we toured one.  They reuse props many times and can even rent them sometimes.  It was quite amazing.
We had a private tour, not on purpose, just luck, usually 100 or more people.  Part of the tradition they have in New Orleans is they have a cake at every party they have and there is a baby Jesus baked into it.  They serve it and whoever finds the Jesus throws the next party and bakes the next cake.  Out of 100+ pieces, Kevin got the baby Jesus!  Guess we'll be throwing a party sometime soon.

We also walked along the bank, N.O. is much like Charleston believe it or not.  Historic, the house style, the bank along the Mississippi, the market, etc.  They just have a little more Party in them in N.O.  We did stop on Bourbon St. one evening and listened to REAL live Jazz!  They played the The Saint's Go Marching In, was cool to hear that in N.O. on Bourbon St.!  We had coffee and Bugays at a great little famous place at the market.
We also rode the ferry on the Mississippi River over to a neighborhood affect by Katrina.  We never saw any damages from her though.  The guide said that 80% of the city flooded, the ninth ward was only a small, small part of that though, it's just what hit national news the most.  The guide took us and a group on a tour of many of the old homes in the Garden District.  Beautiful, old, historic houses that are only like $900,000 to 1.2 million.  Seems so inexpensive compared to Charleston and other places, they were huge!  No restrictions are on what they have to keep and not keep though, that is a shame.     In the middle of the houses is a nice restaurant called Commander's Palace that we went to that evening.  We also went to one of Emeril's restaurants there, unfortunately he wasn't cooking that night.
Sandra Bullock has a house here, left.  It reminded me of a Gingerbread House.  This last house is where Peyton and Eli Manning grew up, look, one of his parents, or a friend drive a Sequioa like I do!

Blake's first field trip!

Last week Blake went on his first field trip with his class at Oakland Dayschool to the local pumpkin patch at a nearby church.  I loved watching him play with his friends and enjoy the day.  Griffin (blue shirt) is a good buddy from church, Walker (spider shirt) was in his class last year and they still see each other often at school, and Izzy (orange dress) has been in his class 2 years now for 4 days.  He's gotten to know her well.

Spencer is in his class again this year too, they were so cute during the trip, they stuck by each other's side the whole time.  Even holding hands at times.  Cute toddlers!

Fall Saturdays with friends

Play dates and times with friends over at the house are so much fun!  We enjoy having lots of kids over for Blake and Delaney to play.  Two weekends in a row now we have gathered in our back yard.
Callie is great with Delaney, they played in the sandbox for almost an hour!!!
Blake had his first friend go to sleep
in his room after playing.  Jackson
started out the night.  He was sad when
he got up the next morning and
Jackson wasn't there anymore.
Jackson and Blake enjoyed playing basketball together.  Sadie came over for the USC game and all the kids had fun on the playset, it's nice letting them play and being able to sit and talk with our friends.  Been looking forward to this day for 2 years now, the best part is watching them enjoy each other, laugh, and have so much fun!

Fall Festival at Black's on Hwy 5

Each October Black's Peaches has a fall festival along with the other one down the street.  We went to the toddler friendly one and the kids had a blast!  The QCP kids came out to join us, we had a great time!

Riley and Delaney hung out on the haystacks for a quick picture with the pumpkins.  This was the 3 little pigs straw house, it was so cute, you could even go inside it as an adult and it was huge.  Then, right next to it were the 3 little pigs, which were the kids favorite, in a pen.

There were cute board for kids to have their picture taken in, here are all the kids, notice mine is the one screaming on the end not wanting to have his picture taken!

A few things to remember...

Blake and Delaney both go through phases of sweet things, funny things, and irritable things they do.  Here are a few of my favorites and ones that drive me crazy, but make me love them even more.

Blake:
he likes to go to "i-pop" for breakfast
he breaks out in song randomly
he just started singing the prayer before dinner
he always wants to hold on to just one toy wherever we go
he says "I love you" out of the blue to me
he gets his mind set on something he wants, or deserves, and won't let go of it until he gets it throwing a fit, crying, and reminding me over and over and over (I'm talking, hours and days)
oh and that smile and laugh he has, it melts my heart... The other day I laid in his bed with him so I could try to nap too, he woke early from a bad dream, and I would peak to see if he was asleep and he would peak and shut his eyes and smile this smile he couldn't help into his pillow and then try again to pretend he was sleeping.

Delaney:
she pulls my shirt off my shoulder or down a little so she can snuggle directly on my skin
she loves to clean up after herself and make sure everything goes where it's supposed to at all times
she carries a bag or pocketbook like the ladies on PanAm with her hand in the air and won't put it down until it's where it should be
she refuses to let me change her diaper
she refuses to eat if I try to get her to eat anything, she knows we are separate and she can be her own person
I love that she is testing everything that she can do and learning more and more every time she tests something, great quality
she is pinching others at school and has had to go to time out several times
she sits on people, heads usually, when someone lays on the ground
oh and that smile and laugh she has, she may not speak words very much, but she communities with that smile and series of unbelievable facial expressions like nothing I've ever known

Zipping through the trees!

Have you been on the Camp Canaan Zip Line, the longest in the southeast yet???

I have been twice now and LOVE IT!!!  You have to try it, it's a 2.5 hour tour through the tree tops!
This trip was with my family, well those over 70lbs and 10 years old.  We accomplished fears and had a blast!  Mom watched from below, but was with us all the way.

Fall Festivals

We have enjoyed the fall and today decided to get out and enjoy the weather and a festival.  However I dressed the kids in long sleeves and pants and it was HOT!!!  Ready for consistent fall weather!
We had tickets for both kids to ride the horses, guess who got both rides and who didn't want to do it?  Delaney had a blast, Kevin reminded her not to get too attached because it's an expensive hobby!
Blake did enjoy climbing on the tractor though.  The Collins and Warrens joined us after a little while too and we enjoyed ice cream and the maze together.
Delaney helped feed baby Eliza while we waited forever on the hayride, once we finally made it the kids enjoyed the pumpkin patch, but of course Blake liked the tractor the best!
Another fun Davis Family Fun Day!!!

My sweet husband and kids

I got a knock on the door today with a nice treat!  My husband and kids sent me an Edible Arrangement!  It was signed...
"I love you" -Blake
"Dat, Dat, Dat." -Delaney
"Thanks for all you do for us and the kids, I love you." -Kevin

We went out on a date to eat in Charlotte and then on to the theater to see, "The Addams Family".  It was great on stage!  I love our date nights!

Thoughts on Becoming a Mother

Infertility sucks!  There is no other way to describe it.  I went through the emotional rollarcoaster for over 4 years and at that time I heard statics that 1 out of every 8 women deal with it in some way or form.  Well it seems like about 1 out of 4 now, so many of my friends, in town, out of town, in every part of my life are dealing with it.  When I went through it I seemed so alone, no one else was going though it to talk to about it or just vent to that understood.  I joined a group called RESOLVE in Charlotte and they were a great group of ladies with much needed support.  Now that I have my 2 wonderful children I am so blessed, I wish I could help support others and give them the hope they need.

One of my dear freinds blogged this the other day and I just had to reblog it, it's what I would have been posting 3 years ago as I was finising a miscarriage and getting prepared for round 2 of IVF.  The feelings from infertitily do finally fade after healing time, but I can remember this all too well.  Love to al my friends out there going through this.  There is no other way to describe it other than, "It sucks!"

I believe going through this made me become a better mother and I feel that I cherish them a little more than I would have if I wouldn't have gone through it.  I'm glad to look back on the years of it now, but I'm thankful for them, they made me a better mother and a better person (after the fact, NOT DURING!!!)

Thoughts on Becoming a Mother

There are women that become mothers without effort, without thought, without patience or loss and though they are good mothers and love their children, I know that I will be better.
I will be better not because of genetics, or money or that I have read more books,
but because I have struggled and toiled for this child.
I have longed and waited. I have cried and prayed.
I have endured and planned over and over again.

Like most things in life, the people who truly have appreciation are those who have struggled to attain their dreams. I will notice everything about my child. I will take time to watch my child sleep, explore and discover. I will marvel at this miracle every day for the rest of my life.

I will be happy when I wake in the middle of the night to the sound of my child, knowing that I can comfort, hold and feed him and that I am not waking to take another temperature, pop another pill, take another shot or cry tears of a broken dream. My dream will be crying for me. I count myself lucky in this sense; that God has given me this insight, this special vision with which I will look upon my child that my friends will not see.

Whether I parent a child I actually give birth to or a child that God leads me to, I will not be careless with my love. I will be a better mother for all that I have endured. I am a better wife, a better aunt, a better daughter, neighbor, friend and sister because I have known pain.
I know disillusionment as I have been betrayed by my own body, I have been tried by fire and hell many never face, yet given time, I stood tall.

I have prevailed.
I have succeeded.
I have won.

So now, when others hurt around me, I do not run from their pain in order to save myself discomfort. I see it, mourn it, and join them in theirs. I listen. Even though I cannot make it better, I can make it less lonely. I have learned the immerse power of another hand holding tight to mine, of other eyes that moisten as they learn to accept the harsh truth and when life is beyond hard. I have learned a compassion that only comes with walking in those shoes.

I have learned to appreciate life.

Yes I will be a wonderful mother.

Sandra Boynton

We love Sandra Boynton books!  Delaney even studied them recently in school too.  Anyway, here are some of our favorites we read all the time!  Blake used to have to hear Pajama Time every night.  Delaney likes the Going to Bed Book, especially the rock, and rock, and rock to sleep at the end, we have done that for 15 minutes before, saying it over and over.  I think I'm raising readers!

Walk for a cause

We went to the Children's Attention Home fundraiser this morning.  The kids rode much of the way, but finished on foot crossing home plate in the Charlotte Knight's Stadium.  Much fun!

Change

First of all, I'm super upset that my computer crashed, physically by Delaney knocking it off the table. Seems the hard drive is fried, including all my pictures that I took in the past 4 months that I don't have linked online through Picasa. Thank goodness for this blog, MANY are backed up online because of the blog. But you know what, "In three words I can sum up everything about life. It goes on." -Robert Frost I am blogging on Kevin's ipad, so I have a tiny keyboard and can't post pictures. I miss blogging though, it tells my story, it give me a chance to reflect and remember "The little things now, are going to be the big things when I look back later." "Change is never easy, you fight to hold on, you fight to let go." -The Wonder Years I have struggled (good things and bad)with many things in the past few years as I have started a family, had job duty changes, etc. Life changes, and life happens, it's too short to live the same life day to day, change it up, make it interesting, meet new people, and learn all you can during our time on earth, we never know when it'll be our last. "Make sure to tell those you love that you love them every chance you get, you never know when they really need to hear that and feel that love. If people didn't change, life wouldn't go on. Kevin and I went on a marriage retreat with 15 other couple's from church, not just couples, but friends. I feel very blessed right now to have had this trip, not only for Kevin and I to grow closer and better our great marriage through change, which I see as good these past years, but we also got closer friendships with those on that trip. I am blessed to have these wonderful friends in my life. I love ya'll and thank ya'll for a family to lean on when needed. So, you know, change is a good thing, change helps life happen, and change hurts, but change is the only way we'll make it in this crazy world. "There is nothing wrong with change as long as it's in the right direction." -Winston Churchill

Pumpkins

I have a feeling we are going to end up with tons of pumpkins this year, we picked ours out at the Farmer's Market where we get eggs, fruits and vegetables every week.  Blake's class is going on a field trip to a pumpkin patch, and we are going to a couple Fall Festivals.

Pumpkins, pumpkins!!!!
